![]() The loot and leveling loop here is fantastic, and there is no scarcity of drops that generate excitement when they appear. In the open world dying alone means respawning far away and having to trudge back, but you learn to play more carefully, you learn which skills will help you (the self-revive one is a must) and you get better in time. Playing solo can be tough, even though The Division 2 does have matchmaking for many activities. The Division is only now getting truly “hard” now that I’m smacking up Challenge difficulty in the endgame, but when I die normally, I always feel like it’s something I did wrong rather than the game screwing me over. It can turn even the most mundane of encounters into deadly shootouts, where any random patrol group on the street can ruin your day if you don’t take a moment to think about how to engage them. Enemy AI is without question one of the best I’ve seen in video game history, as bad guys will push you when you’re low and try to heal, hide when they’re outmatched, flank when you’re not expecting it. ![]() ![]() Enemies feel less spongy overall, and you can now break specific pieces of armor to engage more tactically. Even if I’m never going to like cover-based, third-person gameplay over more fun, action-oriented games like Destiny and Anthem, what they’ve done here is very solid. The Division 2 has improved combat dramatically over the first game.
